The confidential one-on-one conversation (“Caucus”)

The confidential one-on-one interview (“Caucus”) is an important aspect of mediation, especially when clarifying interests at the start. Some things cannot be said publicly and should be discussed privately. The Caucus revolves around the one conflict party at hand and his/her interests/view of things. It helps to clarify the roots of one’s own interests and opinions.

The one-on-one interview requires empathy, emotional intelligence and tact from the mediator. It can tip the scales and clear the way for mediation to take place in a sense of true cooperation. The content of the interview is confidential, unless the party agrees to include certain aspects in the mediation.
